Ohad Naharin in conversation with Olivia Gesbert On the occasion of the exhibition "Noa Eshkol. 1924-2007. Dance and compositions"
Ohad Naharin, the choreographer and creator of the movement language “Gaga,” is a major figure in contemporary dance.
Born in 1952 in Mizra, Israel, he began his career as a dancer with the Batsheva Dance Company in 1974 and made his choreographic debut in New York in 1980.
In 1990, Naharin was appointed artistic director of the Batsheva Dance Company and founded the Batsheva Ensemble. He has created more than thirty works for these two companies and has also staged works for other companies around the world.
In addition, Naharin developed “Gaga,” an innovative exploration of movement and a daily training practice for Batsheva dancers, which has since spread worldwide among both dancers and non-dancers.
After nearly thirty years at the head of Batsheva, Naharin stepped down as artistic director in 2018, while continuing to work there as associate choreographer. Batsheva remains the primary site of his research, development, and teaching of “Gaga.”
In connection with the exhibition dedicated by the mahJ to Noa Eshkol, Ohad Naharin will discuss various facets of his work and reflect on the artist, who passed away in 2007 and to whom he dedicated his work Sadeh21 in 2011.
